The original
Essex House sign consisted of large sheet-copper letters housed by a series of vertical steel trusses with diagonal bracing and horizontal cross members spanning the trusses.
Despite its expert craftsmanship, after more than 85 years, the original sheet copper letters were falling apart.
American & Interstate Signcrafters was responsible for removing these letters safely. We also performed the fabrication and installation of the identical lightweight, weather-resistant aluminum letters.
As an added challenge, we were asked to preserve the building's appearance throughout the project's duration. To achieve this, we brought each letter to the roof in pieces, assembled and hoisted them to the structure one letter at a time.
To date, the JW Marriott Essex House high rise sign remains one of the only signs that can be seen from Central Park.
