Let's face it: parking garages aren't exactly the pinnacle of design. While they provide shelter for your vehicle, they tend to be pretty unremarkable from the outside. Rutgers University recently sought to change that, and they turned to American / Interstate Signcrafters to do it.
Founded in 2015, The Honors Living-Learning Community (HLLC), located in Newark, aims to "create a more equitable, diverse, and socially-focused tomorrow." It only seemed right to have signage reflecting this goal. The design and landscape architecture for the project was brilliantly created by Supermass Studio, located in New York, NY.
Adjacent to the HLLC is a 185' x 57' parking garage, and AI Signcrafters was tasked with fabricating and installing new signs to go with it. The very concept of the project focused on celebrating the many different cultures within the HLLC.
In the end, perforated signs in multiple languages touting the HLLC name were mounted to the existing parking garage, nearly blending the structure into the background. The new signage serves as a reminder of Rutgers University's persisting commitment to diversity and inclusion.
