The original Essex House sign consisted of large sheet-copper letters housed by a series of vertical steel trusses with diagonal bracing and horizontal cross members spanning the trusses.
Despite its expert craftsmanship, after more than 85 years the original sheet copper letters were falling apart.
American & Interstate Signcrafters was responsible for removing the letters safely and for fabricating and installing identical lightweight, weather-resistant aluminum replacements.
As an added challenge, AIS was asked to preserve the building's appearance throughout the project's duration. To achieve this, each letter was brought to the roof in pieces, assembled, and hoisted to the structure one letter at a time.
